Auf Deutsch: Wird Zcash verboten?
Quick answer: No country has banned owning Zcash (ZEC). The coming change is about access, not ownership:
- The EU. From 10 July 2027, EU Regulation 2024/1624 bars banks and crypto service providers in the EU from keeping accounts that allow anonymous transactions “including through anonymity-enhancing coins”. The law’s definition covers coins whose privacy is optional, so it covers ZEC. The rule applies to those firms, not to people holding ZEC in their own wallets.
- Outside the EU. South Korea, Dubai and the Philippines already bar licensed exchanges from handling privacy coins.
- The US has moved the other way. The SEC closed its Zcash Foundation inquiry in January 2026, and a Zcash ETF began trading in August 2026.

What the 2027 EU rule says, and what it doesn’t
- What it bans. Article 79(1) of Regulation 2024/1624 says credit institutions, financial institutions and crypto-asset service providers “shall be prohibited from keeping … any account otherwise allowing for the anonymisation of the customer account holder or the anonymisation or increased obfuscation of transactions, including through anonymity-enhancing coins.”
- Does it include Zcash? Yes. Article 2(1)(25) defines anonymity-enhancing coins as crypto-assets with built-in features that make transfer information anonymous “either systematically or optionally”. Zcash’s privacy is optional, and the text treats it the same as Monero’s.
- When. Article 90(2) says the regulation “shall apply from 10 July 2027”. Some sites say 1 July 2027. That date comes from a separate law about the new EU authority’s first choice of firms it will supervise. It is not the privacy-coin rule.
- Who it binds. Banks, financial institutions and crypto service providers. Nothing in it bans people from holding ZEC or using a self-custody wallet. Transfers between a provider and a self-custody address aren’t banned either: under Article 40, providers must assess their risk.
- The open question. Most exchanges that list ZEC only send it to and from transparent addresses, which work like Bitcoin addresses. MiCA lets platforms list a coin when holders and history can be identified. No regulator has said yet whether transparent-only ZEC meets that test, or whether it survives the 2027 rule. Until one does, expect EU exchanges to decide pair by pair.
Is Zcash treated differently from Monero?
In EU law, no. The definition covers both.
In practice, exchanges have treated ZEC more gently than XMR. Zcash has two kinds of address:
- Transparent addresses work like Bitcoin and are public.
- Shielded addresses hide the sender, receiver and amount.
About 70% of all ZEC (11.96 million of 16.98 million) sat in transparent addresses on 8 October 2026 (CoinDesk). Exchanges use that:
- Coinbase accepts ZEC from either kind of address but sends only to transparent ones.
- Binance asked for deposits from identifiable addresses. Zcash developers built “TEX” addresses (ZIP 320) for it, and Binance kept ZEC after its April 2025 vote.
- Gemini has allowed withdrawals to shielded addresses since September 2020.
Monero has no transparent mode. Binance (February 2024) and Kraken across the EEA (October 2024) delisted it entirely.
Zcash’s legal status by country
“No ban found” means we found no law or regulator statement banning individuals from owning ZEC. It is a search result, not legal advice. Last checked 11 October 2026.
| Country or region | Owning ZEC | Exchanges and ZEC | Since |
|---|---|---|---|
| European Union (including Germany) | Not banned: MiCA and Regulation 2024/1624 bind firms, not holders | Trading platforms need holders and history to be identifiable (MiCA 76(3)). From 10 July 2027, providers can’t keep accounts that use anonymity-enhancing coins. No BaFin statement on Zcash found | 30 Dec 2024; 10 Jul 2027 |
| United States | No federal ban found. The IRS taxes digital assets as property | ZEC is on regulated venues: Gemini (approved by New York’s regulator in 2018) and Coinbase (sends ZEC to transparent addresses only). Grayscale ZCSH ETF since Aug 2026 | – |
| United Kingdom | No ban found | Coinbase UK stopped supporting ZEC in Aug 2019. No UK regulator rule on privacy coins found | 2019 |

| United Arab Emirates (Dubai) | DIFC regulator says individuals may hold privacy tokens in private wallets | Dubai’s VARA prohibits activity involving anonymity-enhanced coins (2023). | Switzerland | No ban found | No regulator statement on privacy coins found | – |
So, will Zcash be banned?
Owning ZEC. None of the laws above bans it, and the EU text clearly targets firms. The rules as written give no sign that EU countries will ban holding ZEC.
Buying ZEC on an EU exchange. This is likely to get harder after 10 July 2027, unless regulators accept transparent-only handling. The direction elsewhere is mixed:
- Dubai and the Philippines tightened their rules in 2026.
- US regulators closed the Zcash Foundation case, and a ZEC ETF launched.
Laws change. Check your own country’s rules and tax position, and keep records of what you buy and sell.
How people get ZEC today
- A regulated exchange, where your country still lists ZEC. Withdrawals usually go to a transparent address.
- A wallet with a built-in swap, such as Zodl (formerly Zashi).
- An instant swap service. On GhostSwap you swap BTC, ETH, USDT or another coin to ZEC with no account, email or ID upload. GhostSwap pays ZEC to a transparent address (t1 or t3), and you can move it into the shielded pool in your wallet afterwards.

FAQ
Is Zcash legal?
Yes, in every country we checked, owning ZEC is legal or not addressed by law. Some countries bar licensed exchanges from listing privacy coins (South Korea, the Philippines, Dubai), and the EU will stop its crypto service providers from offering accounts that use them from 10 July 2027.
Is Zcash banned in the EU?
No. MiCA has limited which coins trading platforms can admit since 30 December 2024. From 10 July 2027, Regulation 2024/1624 stops banks and crypto service providers from keeping accounts that use anonymity-enhancing coins. Neither rule bans individuals from holding ZEC.
Will Zcash be banned in 2027?
Not for holders. The 2027 EU rule applies to providers, not to people with their own wallets. Whether EU exchanges can keep offering ZEC through transparent addresses is still open, because no regulator has ruled on it.
Is the EU deadline 1 July or 10 July 2027?
10 July 2027, under Article 90(2) of Regulation 2024/1624. The 1 July 2027 date belongs to a different EU law about which firms the new EU authority supervises directly.
Is Zcash legal in the US?
Yes. We found no federal ban. Gemini and Coinbase list ZEC, Grayscale’s Zcash ETF began trading in August 2026, and the IRS treats digital assets as property for tax.
Is Zcash treated differently from Monero?
Not in EU law, since the definition covers optional privacy. In practice exchanges have kept ZEC more often because they can use its transparent addresses. Binance kept ZEC in 2025 after delisting Monero in 2024, and OKX listed ZEC again in November 2025.
Is Zcash being delisted?
Some exchanges have dropped it (OKX in January 2024, KuCoin in September 2025), and others kept or re-added it (Binance in 2025, OKX in November 2025). It depends on the exchange and your country.
