USDT ERC20 to ZEC: Swap Tether to Zcash With No KYC

The USDT this page takes is the ERC-20 version: a token contract that lives on Ethereum. Every transfer of it runs that contract, and Ethereum charges for the work in ETH only. A wallet that holds plenty of USDT but no ETH cannot sign the deposit at all, so put a small ETH balance in the same 0x address before you begin.

The gas cost follows demand on Ethereum, not the size of your transfer. Moving a modest sum of Tether costs about as much as moving a large one, which is why many small swaps lose more to gas than one larger swap. MetaMask, Rabby and Ledger Live show the gas estimate in ETH on the confirmation step; quiet hours are usually cheaper.

After you sign, Ethereum confirms the transfer within roughly two to five minutes. Paste the transaction hash into Etherscan to watch it. Until that confirmation the rate floats with the market, so a deposit that sits pending because of low gas also changes the ZEC you end up with.

Open the receive tab of a Zcash wallet and the first thing you usually see is a long unified address starting with u1. That is not the one to paste here. This swap pays ZEC to a transparent address only, and those begin with t1 (a single-key address) or t3 (a script address, often used for multisig).

Zodl (formerly Zashi), Zkool and Zingo all keep a transparent address next to the unified one, usually behind a toggle or a second tab on the receive tab. Copy that, paste it into the box, and read the first two characters before you go on. A zs address from an older wallet is shielded too, so it also cannot take the payout.

Prefer a t-address that has never been used. Anything sent to a transparent address is public, and an address with earlier payments on it ties this swap to that past activity for anyone reading Blockchair. Most wallets will rotate to a fresh one for you.

Zcash produces a block about every 75 seconds, and your payout counts as confirmed after about 10 to 20 minutes. Your wallet then lists the ZEC as a transparent balance. It is spendable, but it is no more private than the USDT you started with: the amount and the receiving t-address are on the public chain.

Shielding fixes that. Use the shield button in Zodl, Zkool or Zingo to move the transparent balance into your shielded pool. It is one ordinary Zcash transaction, and its small fee is paid in ZEC, which you now hold. After it confirms, payments made from the shielded balance hide sender, receiver and amount.

Two habits help. First, let the coins rest in the pool for a while rather than sending the same amount on straight away, since matching amounts and timing are the easiest links to spot. Second, keep the seed phrase safe before any of this: it restores the transparent and the shielded balance alike.

The exchange box treats each version of USDT as its own coin. Choose the one you actually hold, because a deposit address only accepts tokens on its own chain.

Take care with BNB Smart Chain: a MetaMask or Rabby account uses one and the same 0x string on both chains, so the wallet may list two USDT balances side by side. Switch the wallet to Ethereum and confirm the balance you mean to spend is there before you pick this pair.

The 0x address in your sender field is also the refund destination. Failed swaps send the USDT home to that sender address you entered, so pick a wallet whose keys you hold, never the withdrawal address of a trading account. Bear in mind that Tether, the issuer, is able to freeze USDT on any address it chooses; that power is built into the token itself.

Your swap ID opens a status page tracking three moments: deposit seen, deposit confirmed, ZEC sent. A slow start nearly always means the transfer is still pending on Ethereum because its gas was set too low, or the amount differs from what the box asked for. A USDT ERC20 balance is about as public as money gets. Etherscan lists every incoming and outgoing transfer of any 0x address, and anyone who learns that one address is yours can read your stablecoin history. The issuer can also freeze it. Zcash offers a different deal: once the ZEC is shielded, the network verifies payments with zero-knowledge proofs without showing who paid whom or how much.

The trade-off is price. USDT tracks the dollar; ZEC moves with the crypto market, sometimes sharply. People who make this swap usually do it because they want a private balance or plan to pay someone in ZEC, and they size it accordingly.
