Quick answer: You can sell Monero (XMR) three main ways in 2026.

  1. Swap XMR to BTC or USDT with a no-account service such as GhostSwap, then keep it or sell it on an exchange you already use. It usually takes 20 to 60 minutes.
  2. Trade peer to peer on Haveno (through a network such as RetoSwap) for a bank transfer, cash or crypto, or on Bisq 1 for BTC. No ID, but you lock a security deposit.
  3. Sell on a centralised exchange that still lists XMR where you live, such as Kraken in the US. You need a verified account with ID.

Binance, OKX and Coinbase don’t offer XMR, and LocalMonero closed in 2024. Here’s how the routes that remain compare.

Option 1: Swap XMR to BTC or USDT on GhostSwap

GhostSwap is a no-KYC crypto exchange: there’s no account, and we never ask for your name, email, phone number or identity documents to start a swap. The swapped coins are paid straight to the wallet address you enter, and the Monero exchange page lists the main XMR pairs. Rates are floating, and network fees are included in the quote.

It’s a direct way to convert Monero to Bitcoin, and step one if you want cash.

Step by step

  1. Choose the pair. Open XMR to BTC or XMR to USDT TRC-20 and enter the amount. The box shows what you’ll receive, the network fee, and the minimum and maximum before you send anything.
  2. Paste your receiving address.
    • A Bitcoin address starts with bc1, 3 or 1.
    • A Tron address for USDT TRC-20 starts with T and is 34 characters long. In a multi-coin wallet, copy the address listed under Tron, not a 0x address.
    • Paste it; never type an address by hand.
  3. Add your Monero sender address. Enter the address of the Monero wallet you’ll send from. If a swap can’t be completed, the XMR goes back there.
  4. Send the XMR. Send the exact amount shown from your own wallet, such as Feather, Cake Wallet or Monero GUI, to the one-time deposit address.
  5. Receive. Your XMR needs 10 confirmations, about 20 minutes, and the BTC or USDT is usually paid out 20 to 60 minutes after you send. Follow it on the status page, and keep your swap ID.

What to expect

  • Minimum: about 0.058 XMR for both pairs when we checked on 20 October 2026. Limits move with the market, so check the box before you send.
  • Rate: floating. The final amount is set when your deposit confirms, and there’s no fixed-rate option.
  • Fees: the service fee and payout network fee are in the quote. Your wallet charges its own fee to send the XMR.
  • No bank payouts: GhostSwap pays out crypto only, never to a bank account or card.
  • Rare reviews: very rarely, a deposit is paused for a short review. It ends with the swap completed, or the deposit returned to an address you control when the review allows it.

BTC or USDT?

  • BTC if you want to hold Bitcoin or move it to an exchange. Bitcoin confirms the payout in 10 to 30 minutes.
  • USDT TRC-20 if you want a dollar-pegged balance. Tron confirms in about a minute, but moving the USDT later needs some TRX in that wallet for fees.

To get cash, send the coins to an exchange or P2P platform you already use and sell them there, under its rules (usually a verified account). Check that it accepts that coin and network in your country: Kraken, for example, doesn’t let EEA or Canadian clients deposit or trade USDT.

Option 2: Sell Monero peer to peer

Haveno and RetoSwap: XMR for bank transfer, cash or crypto

Haveno is open-source software for trading XMR with other people, and its FAQ says it “is and will always be non-KYC”. The project runs no public network itself, so you use one such as RetoSwap, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.

How a sale works:

  1. You and the buyer each lock a security deposit, and your XMR goes into a 2-of-3 multisig wallet. Each trader holds one key; an arbitrator holds the third.
  2. After about 20 minutes the funds unlock, and the buyer pays you outside Haveno.
  3. Once the money has arrived, you click “Payment received”. The XMR goes to the buyer, and both deposits come back.

If something goes wrong, use the trade chat, then the arbitrator. You can get paid by bank transfer, payment apps, pay by mail or face to face. RetoSwap also lets you sell XMR for BTC, BCH, ETH, LTC or USDT (on Ethereum and Tron).

Bisq 1: XMR for BTC only

On Bisq 1, Monero is a payment method that settles Bitcoin trades, so selling XMR means buying BTC with it.

  • You need BTC for the security deposit (at least 15% of the trade) and fees. You can’t start with XMR alone.
  • Trades are capped at 0.25 BTC.
  • As the XMR sender, use a wallet that shows the transaction key and transaction ID. Bisq says traders who can’t provide this data lose disputes.

Bisq 2 doesn’t trade Monero yet: XMR swaps are on its roadmap with no date.

2026 security notes

Both projects had trade-protocol exploits this year and published fixes:

  • Bisq says a 1 May 2026 exploit hit Bisq 1 altcoin trades and affected 10 users. It shipped a hardened release, proposed full refunds and advises against keeping long-term savings in the Bisq wallet.
  • RetoSwap’s 24 May 2026 release refers to “the recent Haveno trade protocol exploit”. Haveno has shipped several security releases since, the latest on 17 October 2026.

Run the latest version, and keep only what you’re trading in these apps.

Other no-account options

  • Atomic swaps. BasicSwap is a desktop app that trades XMR for BTC and other coins with no middleman and no fee beyond network costs. You run it on your own machine.
  • LocalMonero is gone. It stopped new trades on 14 May 2024, and its site now says the service is closed.

Option 3: Sell XMR on a centralised exchange

Several big exchanges don’t offer Monero:

  • Binance stopped XMR trading on 20 February 2024.
  • OKX delisted its XMR pairs on 5 January 2024.
  • Coinbase says Monero is not tradable on Coinbase.

Kraken still lists XMR in some countries. Its restrictions page (updated 30 September 2026) bars XMR in the EEA, the UK, Canada and Australia, and Kraken has also delisted it in India and the UAE. XMR isn’t on its restricted list for US clients, though Kraken doesn’t serve New York or Maine residents. You upload a government ID before you can deposit and trade.

Other exchanges showed XMR markets on CoinGecko on 20 October 2026, including KuCoin, HTX, Bitfinex, MEXC, Poloniex and WhiteBIT. Check that an exchange serves your country before you sign up. KuCoin, for example, has required ID checks for new accounts since July 2023, and in January 2025 agreed to leave the US market for at least two years. For every XMR delisting with its date, see our Monero delistings tracker.

Do you pay tax when you sell Monero?

In many countries, selling crypto or swapping one coin for another can be a taxable event. Two examples:

  • US: the IRS treats digital assets as property. You report transactions, including selling for dollars or exchanging one digital asset for another, whether or not there’s a gain or loss.
  • UK: HMRC counts selling crypto, and exchanging it for a different cryptoasset, as disposals that may mean Capital Gains Tax.

Keep a record of each sale or swap: the date, amounts, value in your own currency, and the swap ID or transaction hash. Follow your local tax rules, and ask a tax professional if unsure. For the legal side, see is Monero legal?

How to sell Monero safely

  • Check the site. The real GhostSwap is ghostswap.io and its Tor onion mirror. It never asks for your seed phrase or to connect a wallet.
  • Check every address. Paste it, compare the first and last characters, and match the network (Tron for USDT TRC-20).
  • Start small. Send a small amount first, then the rest.
  • On P2P, confirm the money yourself. Click “Payment received” only when the payment shows in your own bank or wallet, never because of a screenshot. Haveno’s docs warn that chargebacks are still possible with some methods, such as SEPA, Zelle and Revolut. Keep all messages in the built-in trade chat.
  • Save your swap ID. Support needs it if a swap looks stuck. See GhostSwap help.

FAQ

How do I sell Monero without KYC? Swap it to BTC or USDT on a no-account service such as GhostSwap, or sell it peer to peer on Haveno or Bisq 1. None of these asks for ID. Turning BTC or USDT into money in a bank account usually happens on an exchange, which does.

How do I swap XMR to BTC without an account? Open XMR to BTC on GhostSwap, paste your Bitcoin address, add your Monero sender address and send the XMR. There’s no sign-up, and the BTC is usually paid out 20 to 60 minutes later. Bisq 1 and BasicSwap also trade XMR for BTC.

How do I cash out Monero to my bank account? Sell XMR on Haveno for a bank transfer, or swap it to BTC or USDT and sell that on an exchange you already use. Or sell XMR directly on an exchange that lists it in your country, such as Kraken in the US.

Can I sell XMR on Binance or Coinbase? No. Binance stopped XMR trading on 20 February 2024, and Coinbase says Monero is not tradable on its platform. OKX delisted XMR in January 2024.

What replaced LocalMonero? No single service. Haveno, through networks such as RetoSwap, is the closest match for selling XMR for cash or bank transfers. LocalMonero stopped new trades on 14 May 2024.

Can I exchange XMR anonymously? You can swap XMR without an account or ID. GhostSwap is a no-KYC crypto exchange: there’s no account, and we never ask for your name, email, phone number or identity documents to start a swap. How private the whole trip is also depends on your wallet, your network connection and where the coins go next: an exchange that verifies you will know who cashed out.

Do I pay tax when I sell Monero? You may. In many countries, selling crypto or swapping it for another coin is a taxable event. Keep records of each sale or swap and follow your local tax rules.
