Updated 20 October 2026
Quick answer: Card providers rarely sell Monero (XMR), so the realistic route has two steps. First, buy BTC, LTC or USDT with your credit or debit card from a card provider, which checks your ID, and send it to your own wallet. Then swap it to XMR on GhostSwap with no account: the XMR is paid straight to your Monero wallet, usually 15 to 35 minutes after you send LTC.
Can you buy XMR with a credit card directly?
Rarely. Card payments for crypto go through card providers (on-ramps): payment businesses that charge your card, verify you and send the coins.
On 20 October 2026 we checked:
- Our own buy page, which offers more than 100 coins and tokens from three card providers. XMR is not one of them.
- The public coin lists of four large card providers. None listed XMR. All four listed Bitcoin and Litecoin.
So the realistic route is to buy a coin that card providers do sell, then swap it to XMR. If you do find a service that sells XMR by card, expect the same identity checks as any card purchase.
How to buy Monero with a card, step by step
- Set up a Monero wallet. Install one and write its seed phrase on paper. Feather Wallet is a popular desktop choice. Cake Wallet works on iPhone and Android and also holds Bitcoin and Litecoin, so one app covers the whole route. Compare them in our guide to the best Monero wallets.
- Buy BTC, LTC or USDT with your card. Use GhostSwap’s buy crypto page or any app you already use. On our buy page you pick the coin, enter your own wallet address and pay with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or a SEPA bank transfer, through a third-party payment provider.
- Pass the card provider’s checks. You don’t open an account with us, but the payment provider handles your card and runs its own identity checks. Depending on the provider, your country and the amount, it may ask for your name, date of birth and address, or an ID document and a selfie.
- Get the coins into your own wallet. The buy page sends them to the address you entered. If you bought elsewhere, withdraw them to your own wallet first. The exchange box asks for the address you send from: the deposit must come from that address, and refunds go back to it.
- Open the swap pair for your coin: LTC to XMR, BTC to XMR, USDT (TRC20) to XMR or USDT (ERC20) to XMR. Enter the amount. The box shows the XMR you get, the network fee, and the minimum and maximum.
- Paste your Monero address and the address you send from. A Monero address is 95 characters long and starts with 4 (standard) or 8 (subaddress). Paste it; never type it by hand.
- Send the exact amount to the one-time deposit address. Follow the swap on its status page with your swap ID. The XMR is paid straight to your wallet and is spendable after 10 Monero confirmations, about 20 minutes.
GhostSwap is a no-KYC crypto exchange: there’s no account, and we never ask for your name, email, phone number or identity documents to start a swap. Rates are floating, and network fees are included in the quote.
Before you buy:
- Buy enough to swap. The buy page says purchases generally start from about $20, but the smallest USDT (TRC20) to XMR swap was about 30 USDT on 20 October 2026. The exchange box shows the live minimum for every pair.
- USDT needs a second coin for fees. Sending USDT (TRC20) costs a network fee in TRX, and sending USDT (ERC20) costs one in ETH. Keep a little of that coin in the same wallet.
Which coin should you buy with your card?
All four work; they differ in speed and network fees. Swap times run from your deposit to the XMR being sent.
| Coin you buy by card | Swap pair | Typical swap time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Litecoin (LTC) | LTC to XMR | 15 to 35 minutes | Litecoin network fees are usually a fraction of a cent, so small amounts are practical |
| Bitcoin (BTC) | BTC to XMR | 20 to 60 minutes | Every card provider we checked sells it; Bitcoin network fees are higher than Litecoin’s |
| USDT on Tron (TRC20) | USDT (TRC20) to XMR | 5 to 15 minutes | The quickest swap; you need a little TRX for the network fee |
| USDT on Ethereum (ERC20) | USDT (ERC20) to XMR | 10 to 25 minutes | You need a little ETH for the network fee |
If unsure, pick LTC: low fees, and no second coin needed to pay them.
Card, P2P or exchange: your options compared
| Route | Pay by card? | ID checks | Where your XMR ends up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card to LTC, then swap on GhostSwap | Yes, at the card provider | The card provider verifies you; the swap needs no account | Your own Monero wallet |
| Card to BTC, then swap | Yes, at the card provider | Same as above | Your own Monero wallet |
| P2P: Haveno or RetoSwap | No card option | No account; you trade with another person | Your Haveno wallet, which you control |
| Exchange that lists XMR | Depends on the exchange and your country | Verified account with an ID document | The exchange, until you withdraw |
P2P markets (Haveno, RetoSwap). Haveno is open-source software for trading XMR peer to peer, and RetoSwap is a public network that runs it. Its payment methods include bank transfers, payment apps and cash, but no general credit or debit card option (only Amazon eGift cards and a few regional card-to-card transfers). Haveno’s docs call chargeback risk “the top consideration for fiat payment methods” and flag PayPal, Venmo and Cash App with “High risk of chargeback!” and lower trade limits. Bisq, another P2P market, says it explicitly avoids “easily reversed methods like PayPal or credit cards”.
Exchanges. On 20 October 2026, Kraken’s and KuCoin’s public market data showed XMR trading open. Both need ID:
- Kraken says verifying your account “will allow funds to be deposited and trades to be made”. It no longer offers XMR in the EEA, the UK or Canada.
- KuCoin has required identity checks for new users since 15 July 2023.
Where the exchange takes cards, you can buy USDT by card, trade it for XMR and withdraw the XMR to your own wallet.
Why don’t card providers sell Monero?
1. Chargebacks. A card payment can be disputed and reversed after the coins have gone out; a crypto transfer can’t. That is why card sellers verify buyers, and why P2P markets such as Haveno and Bisq avoid cards.
2. Rules for regulated firms. Card providers are regulated payment businesses, and privacy-coin rules are aimed at regulated firms:
- EU, since 30 December 2024. MiCA Article 76(3) stops trading platforms from admitting coins with a built-in anonymisation function, unless the holders and their transaction history can be identified.
- EU, from 10 July 2027. EU Regulation 2024/1624 bars banks and crypto service providers from keeping accounts that use anonymity-enhancing coins.
- Elsewhere. Dubai, South Korea and the Philippines bar regulated crypto firms from handling or listing privacy coins.
3. Delistings. Big exchanges have dropped XMR:
- OKX in January 2024.
- Binance in February 2024.
- Kraken across the EEA in October 2024, citing regulatory changes, and in Canada in September 2025.
None of these rules bans people from owning XMR. They limit what regulated businesses can offer.
What does buying Monero with a card cost?
- The card purchase. Card purchases usually cost more than bank transfers, and the provider shows its fee before you pay. If you’re in the euro area, the buy page also takes SEPA bank transfers.
- Credit cards. Some card issuers treat crypto purchases as cash advances. A cash advance usually carries an extra fee, and interest generally starts on the day of the transaction, with no grace period. Some banks block crypto purchases on credit cards altogether: Barclays did so for Barclaycard from 27 June 2025. Check your card’s terms before you buy.
- Debit cards. A debit card takes the money from your bank account, so there is no cash advance or credit card interest. The provider’s card fee still applies.
- The swap. Our service fee is built into the quote. Your wallet pays the network fee for the deposit you send.
Is it legal to buy Monero with a card?
In every country we checked, including the US, we found no law banning individuals from owning Monero. Some countries stop regulated exchanges from listing privacy coins. See is Monero legal? for details.
Tax still applies. In the US, the IRS treats digital assets as property, and exchanging one for another can mean a capital gain or loss. Keep your card receipts and swap IDs, and follow your local laws and tax rules.
FAQ
Can I buy Monero with a credit card? Usually not directly: none of the card providers we checked on 20 October 2026 sold XMR. Buy BTC, LTC or USDT with your card from a provider that checks your ID, send it to your own wallet, then swap it to XMR on GhostSwap with no account.
Can I buy XMR with a debit card? Yes, through the same route. Our buy page takes credit and debit cards for BTC, LTC and USDT. A debit card also avoids the cash-advance fees some issuers charge on credit card crypto purchases.
Where can I buy Monero without KYC? If you already hold crypto, swap it to XMR on a no-account swap service. GhostSwap is a no-KYC crypto exchange: there’s no account, and we never ask for your name, email, phone number or identity documents to start a swap. P2P markets such as Haveno and RetoSwap also work without an account. Buying with a card, or on an exchange that lists XMR, involves identity checks.
Where can I buy Monero after the exchange delistings? Three routes still work. Swap a coin you already hold to XMR on GhostSwap with no account, trade peer to peer on Haveno or RetoSwap, or use an exchange that still lists XMR where you live, such as Kraken outside the EEA, the UK and Canada, which verifies your ID. See is Monero legal? for why some exchanges dropped it.
What is the easiest way to buy Monero in 2026? If you hold BTC, LTC, SOL or USDT, swap it to XMR on GhostSwap and receive it in your own Monero wallet, usually 5 to 60 minutes after you send, depending on the coin. SOL to XMR and USDT (TRC20) to XMR are usually the quickest, at 5 to 15 minutes. If you only have a card, buy LTC or BTC with it first (the card provider checks your ID), then swap.
How do I convert Bitcoin to Monero? Open BTC to XMR on GhostSwap, enter the amount, paste your Monero address and the Bitcoin address you send from, then send the BTC to the one-time deposit address. Most BTC to XMR swaps are paid out in 20 to 60 minutes, and the XMR is spendable after 10 confirmations, about 20 minutes.
Can I pay for Monero by card on Haveno or RetoSwap? No. Haveno’s payment methods, which RetoSwap also uses, include no general credit or debit card option, and Haveno’s docs call chargeback risk the top consideration for fiat payments. You can pay sellers by bank transfer, payment app or cash instead.
