How much USDT do you get for TAO?
GhostSwap quotes at 2 Nov 2026, 20:54 UTC, after the service fee and the cost of sending the USDT to your wallet.
The rate floats with the market until your TAO deposit confirms.
Sending TAO: free balance from your coldkey
The deposit must be native TAO on the Bittensor chain, sent from an SS58 address beginning with 5. In Bittensor terms that is your coldkey, the wallet that holds the balance. Talisman and Nova Wallet both show it; in Talisman, pick the Polkadot-style account rather than an Ethereum one.
Only free TAO can be transferred. TAO that is staked to a validator hotkey, or locked in a subnet, has to be unstaked first, and the wallet will refuse to send more than the free part. Leave a little behind for the transfer fee, which Bittensor charges in TAO.
Wrapped TAO tokens that live on Ethereum are a different asset with a different contract. They cannot be sent to this deposit address, which only accepts the native coin.
Bittensor adds a block about every 12 seconds, and a TAO transfer normally shows as credited a few minutes after you sign it. You can watch it on Taostats by pasting your address or the extrinsic hash.
Getting paid in Tether on Ethereum
The payout side is a different world from Bittensor. Tether on Ethereum needs a 0x address, so open MetaMask, Rabby or a Ledger account for the payout. An SS58 address cannot hold it, and nor can a Bittensor-only wallet.
Receiving the Tether costs you nothing. Moving it later does: every Ethereum transfer pays gas in ETH, so put a small amount of ETH on that 0x address before you plan to spend the USDT. If the token does not show after the payout, add the Tether contract as listed on Etherscan, never one pasted into a chat.
Also worth knowing before you choose USDT: its issuer, Tether, is able to freeze any address's USDT. That is built into how USDT works and applies on every network it runs on.
Bittensor and Ethereum side by side
| Bittensor (you send TAO) | Ethereum (you receive USDT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | SS58, starts with 5 | 0x plus 40 hex characters |
| Fee coin | TAO | ETH |
| Typical confirmation | A few minutes | 2 to 5 minutes, roughly |
| Wallets | Talisman, Nova Wallet | MetaMask, Rabby, Ledger |
| Explorer | Taostats | Etherscan |
Value crosses between two chains with no common ground at all, different address shape, different fee coin, different wallets. That is why both address fields matter. The TAO side starts with 5, the Ethereum side starts with 0x, and pasting one where the other belongs is the most common way to get stuck. Keep the two wallets apart in your head too: Talisman can show both kinds of account in one window, which makes it easy to copy the wrong one.
If the TAO swap stalls or fails
The Bittensor sender you type is also where any refund is aimed. Should the swap fail to complete, your TAO is refunded to that coldkey address you entered, so use one whose seed phrase you hold, not a deposit address on a trading platform.
Note your swap ID and the Taostats hash of your TAO transfer. When Taostats shows the TAO as delivered to the deposit address and the status page has not moved on for a long while, send both to support@ghostswap.io. Sending the TAO again in the meantime only adds a second deposit to track. Most delays have a plain cause, such as a transfer that was signed but never submitted, so check Taostats for your extrinsic before anything else. If it is not there, the TAO never left your coldkey and nothing needs fixing on the swap side.
Why miners and stakers swap TAO into ERC20 Tether
A lot of TAO is earned on the network rather than traded for: subnet miners and validators receive emissions, and stakers collect rewards. At some point many of them want part of that in dollars, either to cover hardware and hosting bills or to take some risk off a coin whose price can swing hard.
ERC20 is the right payout when the next stop is Ethereum: a DeFi app, a hardware wallet already set up for Ethereum, or someone who asked to be paid in USDT on that chain. If you would rather pay lower transfer fees later, the box also offers USDT on Tron as TAO to USDT TRC20. For how TAO compares with other AI-linked coins, see our AI tokens guide.
Common mistakes
- Trying to send TAO that is still staked to a hotkey instead of unstaking it to the free balance first.
- Pasting a 5-prefixed Bittensor address in the USDT field, where only a 0x Ethereum address works.
- Sending wrapped TAO from Ethereum to a deposit address that only takes native TAO.
- Using a Talisman Ethereum account as the TAO sender instead of the Polkadot-style account that holds the TAO.
- Forgetting that moving the USDT later needs ETH for gas on the receiving address.

How to Exchange Bittensor to Tether (ERC20)
Select TAO and USDT
Pick TAO in “You send” and USDT in “You get”, then enter the amount.
Enter Tether (ERC20) Address
Paste the Ethereum address that should receive the USDT. Sending USDT to an address on another network can lose the coins. Then enter the Bittensor address you send TAO from; a refund, if ever needed, goes there.
Send Bittensor
Send exactly the amount shown from your own Bittensor wallet to the one-time deposit address.
Receive Tether (ERC20)
Your USDT arrives on Ethereum. Follow each step on the status page with your swap ID.
