How to Exchange Bitcoin to NEAR Protocol
Select BTC and NEAR
Pick BTC in “You send” and NEAR in “You get”, then enter the amount. The box shows how much NEAR you get and the minimum BTC for this pair.
Enter NEAR Protocol Address
Paste the NEAR address that should receive the NEAR (it is a named account such as alice.near or 64 hexadecimal characters). Then enter the Bitcoin address you send BTC from; a refund, if ever needed, goes there.
Send Bitcoin
Send exactly the amount shown from your own Bitcoin wallet to the one-time deposit address.
Receive NEAR Protocol
Your NEAR is paid out once your BTC deposit confirms, and NEAR then confirms it in a few seconds. Most swaps finish within minutes. The exact time depends on how fast each network confirms your deposit. Follow each step on the status page with your swap ID.
Named account or 64-hex account
NEAR does not use one fixed address format. An account can be a readable name such as alice.near, or a 64-character hexadecimal string. Both are valid in the payout field, but they behave differently.
A named account has to exist before anything is sent to it. If the name was never created, a transfer to it fails. A 64-hex account, often called an implicit account, is derived from a key in your wallet and becomes active the first time it receives NEAR, so a brand-new wallet can use it straight away.
Meteor, HOT Wallet and MyNearWallet all show the account on their receive screen. Copy it from there. NEAR names use lowercase letters only, so a capital letter typed by hand points to an account that does not exist. Pasting avoids that, and so does checking the result on NearBlocks first: an existing account has a page there.
Sending bitcoin on-chain
The deposit is a normal on-chain Bitcoin transaction. Send it from Sparrow, Electrum or a hardware wallet to the deposit address in the box. The deposit counts once it has one to three blocks, which on Bitcoin's roughly 10-minute block rhythm is usually the longest part of the whole swap.
The fee rate you choose decides how soon a miner picks the transaction up. A very low rate can leave it waiting in the mempool, and the swap waits with it. Look at the current rates on mempool.space before you send.
Lightning is not the same thing. A Lightning payment never touches the deposit address on-chain, so it cannot fund this swap. Send from a wallet that spends ordinary bitcoin, and use an address that starts with bc1, 3 or 1 as your sender address, because that is where a refund would go.
Native NEAR, not a wrapped copy
The payout is NEAR on NEAR mainnet, the coin the network itself runs on. It is not a bridged token on Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain, and it is not wrapped NEAR inside an app. That matters because only a NEAR wallet reads it: MetaMask, Sparrow or Electrum will show nothing.
NEAR also pays its own fees. Once the payout lands, the same balance covers gas for your next transfer, stake or app call, so you do not need to bring a second coin.
One NEAR detail surprises newcomers. Every account keeps a small part of its balance reserved to pay for the data it stores on chain. The wallet shows this as an amount you cannot send. It is not a fee taken by the swap, and it grows only if the account stores more data, for example by holding many tokens.
BTC and NEAR compared
| BTC (you send) | NEAR (you receive) | |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Bitcoin | NEAR mainnet |
| Address | Begins with bc1, 3 or 1 (on-chain) | name.near or 64 hex characters |
| Confirmation | One to three blocks | A few seconds |
| Fee coin | BTC | NEAR |
| Wallets | Sparrow, Electrum, hardware wallet | Meteor, HOT Wallet, MyNearWallet |
| Explorer | mempool.space | NearBlocks |
The confirmation row shows where time goes. NEAR finalises the payout in a few seconds, so nearly all of the wait sits on the Bitcoin side. The address row shows where mistakes come from: a Bitcoin wallet has nothing to offer the NEAR field, so the receiving wallet has to be set up before you start.
Why move from bitcoin to NEAR
Bitcoin is built to be held and settled, not to run apps. People swap into NEAR when they want to use what is built on it: apps that need quick, cheap transactions, NEAR-based tokens, or staking with a validator from a wallet such as Meteor.
Doing that through a wrapped bitcoin would mean trusting a bridge and still needing NEAR for fees. This pair delivers spendable NEAR directly to your account, with no sign-up. Prices of both coins move, so treat the swap as a change of asset, not a store of value.
Our BTC to NEAR guide walks through wallet setup in more detail, and the Bitcoin price page shows where BTC stands today. To go the other way, use NEAR to BTC.
Quote, refunds and tracking
The box quotes from aggregated liquidity from leading crypto markets and shows the NEAR you receive after fees, together with the minimum and maximum for the pair. The rate floats until the bitcoin deposit confirms; from that point, most swaps finish within minutes.
If a swap cannot be completed, the coins are refunded to the sender address you entered on Bitcoin. Pick an address from a Bitcoin wallet you hold the keys to. Coins withdrawn from an exchange come from a shared address, and a refund there may not be credited to you.
Each swap has a status page with its ID, the deposit on mempool.space and the payout on NearBlocks. If the deposit has its confirmations and the page has not moved for a long time, email support@ghostswap.io with the swap ID and the Bitcoin transaction ID. Do not send the bitcoin again.
Common mistakes
- Entering a .near name that was never created, so the payout has nowhere to go.
- Typing the NEAR name by hand with a capital letter or a missing suffix.
- Paying the deposit over Lightning instead of an on-chain Bitcoin transaction.
- Choosing a fee rate so low that the bitcoin deposit waits in the mempool for hours.
- Expecting the NEAR to appear in MetaMask or a Bitcoin wallet.
