Why the 2016 prices don’t compare

ZEC’s first trading days set prices that later years did not match. But almost no ZEC existed then. CoinMarketCap lists a circulating supply of 476 ZEC on 29 October 2016 and 5,334 ZEC on 3 November 2016. Its market cap stayed under $5 million that week. The Block described the period as one when “circulating supply was very limited and early trading distorted prices”.

In 2026 the picture is different. With 16,987,694 ZEC in circulation (CoinGecko, 15 October 2026), a price of $1,000 means a market cap of about $17 billion.

ZEC price Market cap at 15 Oct 2026 supply
$1,000 About $17.0 billion
$1,227.90 (15 Oct 2026) About $20.9 billion
$1,653.12 (27 Sep 2026) About $28.1 billion

What took ZEC above $1,000 in 2026

These are the reasons the outlets reported at the time:

  • A US ETF. Grayscale turned its Zcash Trust into an ETF that began trading on 25 August 2026, with a 2.5% fee. By 4 September it had about $34.4 million in net inflows (The Block, from Grayscale data). On 7 October, Grayscale’s Krista Lynch said the fund gathered more than $1 billion in its first 30 trading days. That figure is Grayscale’s own.
  • Short sellers forced out. About $36.6 million of leveraged ZEC positions were closed on 4 September, $34.5 million of them bets against the price (CoinDesk).
  • More miners. Network hashrate rose from about 25 GSol/s in late August to briefly above 30 GSol/s (The Block, citing ZcashInfo).
  • A rebound. ZEC had fallen about 72%, from $697.25 on 17 November 2025 to $197.12 on 8 March 2026 (CoinGecko). It then rose more than eightfold by late September.

Will ZEC stay above $1,000? Facts for and against

For:

  • From 5 September to 14 October 2026, ZEC did not trade below $1,001.21 (CoinMarketCap daily lows).
  • More ETFs may follow. A Winklevoss-backed sponsor filed for a Zcash ETF on 6 October 2026 (proposed ticker WINK, 0.25% fee), and Bitwise has also filed (The Block). Neither is trading yet.
  • Supply is capped at 21 million ZEC. The next halving is expected around 23 November 2028 under current rules (z.cash).

Against:

  • Sharp falls happen. ZEC lost 72% from November 2025 to March 2026, and about 11% in the week to 8 October 2026 (CoinDesk).
  • Heavy leverage. Futures open interest was about 2.3 million ZEC, roughly $2.3 billion, on 4 September (CoinDesk). Leveraged moves can reverse quickly.
  • Protocol risk. A counterfeiting flaw in the Orchard shielded pool was disclosed in June 2026, and ZEC fell 31% in 24 hours (The Block). It was patched.
  • Regulation. From 10 July 2027, EU banks and crypto service providers may not keep accounts that use privacy coins, ZEC included. More: Will Zcash be banned?
  • History. After its launch week, ZEC took almost ten years to return to $1,000.

How to get ZEC

  • A regulated exchange. Coinbase and Gemini list ZEC. You need a verified account, and availability depends on your country.
  • The ETF. In the US, ZCSH gives price exposure through a brokerage account. You don’t hold ZEC yourself.
  • An instant swap. On GhostSwap you swap BTC, ETH, USDT or another coin to ZEC with no account, email, sign-up or ID upload. The rate is floating, with the fee in the quote. GhostSwap pays ZEC to a transparent address (t1 or t3), so shield it in your wallet after it arrives. Start with BTC to ZEC, USDT (ERC20) to ZEC, ETH to ZEC or read how to buy Zcash.
