Sending USDT on Tron: energy, bandwidth and TRX
The deposit leaves as a TRC-20 transfer from your Tron address, the 34-character string beginning with T. Tron does not charge a fee in USDT. It meters energy and bandwidth instead, and when an account has not staked TRX for those resources, the network burns some of its TRX. A wallet with USDT but no TRX will fail to send, so add a little TRX first in TronLink or Trust Wallet.
Use the USDT on Tron itself. A portfolio app may lump all your Tether together, but USDT held on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain or Solana is a separate token on a separate ledger and can never reach this Tron deposit.
Tron confirms the transfer in about a minute. You can watch it on Tronscan, where the token transfer tab shows the amount and both addresses. When Tronscan lists your USDT as confirmed, most swaps finish within minutes.
Where ARB lives: Arbitrum One, not Ethereum mainnet
ARB is the token of Arbitrum, an Ethereum layer-2 network. Here it is paid on Arbitrum One, to a 0x address carrying 40 hexadecimal characters. MetaMask and Rabby can both receive it.
The same 0x address exists on Ethereum, Arbitrum One and every other EVM network. That makes the address easy to enter and the balance easy to miss. After the payout, switch the wallet to Arbitrum One; on Ethereum mainnet the ARB will not show, because it was not sent there. Arbiscan, the Arbitrum explorer, confirms it by address or transaction hash.
Do not enter your Tron address here. A T-address belongs to a different network family and cannot hold ARB. ARB also exists as a token on Ethereum mainnet, but that is a separate balance; what you receive from this pair is the Arbitrum One version.
After the payout: ETH on Arbitrum pays the gas
Holding ARB is free. Doing anything with it is not. Every transfer, delegation or app interaction on Arbitrum One pays gas in ETH on Arbitrum, not in ARB and not in TRX. If the 0x address is brand new, it has no ETH on Arbitrum, and the ARB is stuck there until you add some.
Arbitrum gas is far cheaper than on Ethereum mainnet, so a small amount of ETH on Arbitrum lasts a long time. Plan for it before the payout, especially if you intend to delegate your ARB voting power or move it into an app straight away. Our Arbitrum vs Optimism comparison explains how the network itself works. One route is USDT TRC20 to ETH for Ethereum mainnet, after which you move ETH to Arbitrum yourself; the simplest is to keep a little ETH on Arbitrum from earlier activity.
Tron vs Arbitrum One for this swap
| Tron (USDT you send) | Arbitrum One (ARB you receive) | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | T plus 33 more characters | 0x plus 40 hex characters |
| Pays fees with | TRX (energy and bandwidth) | ETH on Arbitrum |
| Confirmation | About a minute | About a minute |
| Wallets | TronLink, Trust Wallet | MetaMask, Rabby |
| Explorer | Tronscan | Arbiscan |
Both chains settle quickly, so the wait is short at each end. The thing to get right is the fee coin: TRX before the swap on Tron, ETH on Arbitrum after it. Neither of those is the coin you are swapping. Getting either one wrong is the usual reason a swap seems slow when it is not. Explorers differ too: Tronscan for the deposit, Arbiscan for the payout.
Refunds to your Tron address
Refunds are aimed at the T-address you type as the sender. If this route cannot be completed, the USDT is refunded on Tron to the sender address you entered. TronLink or Trust Wallet addresses under your control suit that role. A platform address may not credit an incoming refund.
USDT is issued by Tether, and Tether can freeze USDT at any address on Tron, as on other chains. It is a power built into USDT, not into the swap.
For any delay, keep the swap ID and the Tronscan transaction hash. Confirmed on Tronscan but parked on one status for ages? Mail both to support@ghostswap.io, and avoid sending the USDT a second time. A refund arrives as USDT on Tron, so the TRX question returns too: you need some TRX to move it again.
Why swap Tether on Tron for ARB
Tron is where a large share of USDT sits, because transfers there are cheap. Arbitrum is where much of Ethereum's layer-2 activity happens. People holding stablecoins on Tron who want a stake in Arbitrum, to hold ARB, to delegate votes in the Arbitrum DAO or to use it in apps on Arbitrum One, would otherwise need several hops. This pair does it in one, with no account.
Keep in mind that ARB, unlike USDT, moves with the market, so the value you receive can rise or fall afterwards. If you want to go back to dollars on Tron later, use ARB to USDT TRC20. Starting on Tron also means the deposit itself is cheap, since a USDT transfer there costs a small amount of TRX rather than Ethereum gas.
Common mistakes
- Trying to send USDT on Tron with no TRX in the wallet to burn for energy and bandwidth.
- Depositing Tether from Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain or Solana instead of USDT on Tron.
- Looking for the ARB with the wallet set to Ethereum mainnet instead of Arbitrum One.
- Receiving ARB at a fresh 0x address with no ETH on Arbitrum, so it cannot be moved.
- Entering a Tron T-address in the ARB payout field.
