Bitcoin holders swap into AVAX to hold Avalanche's native coin, to stake it, or to pay for activity on Avalanche. Avalanche's Primary Network has three built-in chains (X, P and C), and this pair pays the AVAX on the X-Chain, which is used for sending and receiving AVAX but not for DeFi apps.
