Why Filecoin holders move into ETH
Filecoin is a storage network. Storage providers earn FIL for keeping data and proving they still hold it, and many holders came to FIL that way rather than through a trade. ETH is the coin that pays gas on Ethereum and the one most DeFi apps expect, so turning FIL into ETH is a common step for anyone who wants to use those apps or hold the larger asset.
The two chains do not talk to each other directly. This swap takes FIL on Filecoin and pays ETH on Ethereum, with no bridge and no wrapped FIL on Ethereum. What lands in your wallet is ordinary ETH.
Because ETH pays its own gas, the payout is ready to use straight away. Nothing else has to sit beside it before you can send it on, which makes this direction simpler than swapping into a token.
Sending FIL: address formats and fees
The deposit is FIL on the Filecoin network, sent from a wallet such as Glif or a Ledger. Filecoin addresses usually start with f1. The network fee for your transaction is paid in FIL, on top of the amount you send, so leave a small balance behind.
Filecoin confirms the deposit in a few minutes. You can watch it on Филфокс by searching the message ID or your address. The rate floats with the market until that confirmation is in.
Send from a wallet that is yours. FIL withdrawn from an exchange leaves from a shared address, and that address is where a refund would go. Withdraw to Glif or your Ledger first, then send the deposit from there.
If your FIL is locked as collateral or still vesting from storage rewards, it cannot be sent yet. Only the available balance in the wallet can go to the deposit address.
Filecoin 0x addresses are not Ethereum addresses
Filecoin has its own EVM layer, and wallets that support it can show a Filecoin address in 0x form. It looks exactly like an Ethereum address, but it belongs to the Filecoin network.
That creates a trap on this pair. The ETH payout field needs an address on Ethereum mainnet. If you paste a Filecoin 0x address there, the ETH is sent to that string on Ethereum, which may not be a wallet you can open. Copy the payout address from MetaMask, Rabby or a Ledger while it is set to Ethereum, not from a Filecoin wallet.
The safest habit is to treat the two fields as two different apps. The sender field gets the f1 address from your Filecoin wallet. The payout field gets the 0x address from your Ethereum wallet. If both fields start with the same characters, stop and check before you continue.

A Ledger appears in both columns, but it keeps Filecoin and Ethereum as separate accounts with separate addresses. Open the Filecoin app on the device for the sender address and the Ethereum app for the payout address. Each coin pays its own network's fee, so after the swap the ETH can move without any other coin in the wallet.
Quote, timing and privacy
Type the FIL amount and the exchange box shows the ETH you receive after fees. The quote comes from aggregated liquidity from leading crypto markets and keeps floating until your FIL deposit confirms. The box also lists the smallest and largest FIL amount it accepts.
Most swaps finish within minutes once the deposit confirms. The ETH then needs about 2 to 5 minutes on Ethereum, and Etherscan shows it at your address.

Refunds, tracking and help

Most failed swaps trace back to a different amount than the box showed or an address on the wrong network. Both are easy to avoid by copying, never typing, and checking the first and last characters of each address.
