TAO to LINK: Exchange Native Bittensor for Chainlink, No KYC

TAO is the native coin of Bittensor, the network where subnets reward miners and validators for machine-learning work. It pays its own fees, and its addresses use the SS58 format, starting with 5. LINK sits in a different world: on this pair it is the ERC-20 token on Ethereum that pays Chainlink oracle node operators.

The people who use this direction are mostly Bittensor miners, validators and stakers. Their rewards arrive in TAO, and some want part of that in an Ethereum token they can use in DeFi apps there, without opening an exchange account. Others just want exposure to a second, unrelated project.

Both coins move with the market, so the swap changes what you hold rather than locking in a value. The process itself is short: TAO goes to a deposit address on Bittensor, and LINK is sent to your 0x address on Ethereum.

A Bittensor wallet splits its duties between a coldkey and one or more hotkeys. The coldkey holds your balance and is the one you send from. A hotkey is used by miners and validators for day-to-day network work, and it is not where a transferable balance sits. Use the coldkey address in Talisman or Nova Wallet for both the deposit and the sender field.

Stake is the other catch. Since the dynamic TAO upgrade in February 2025, TAO staked into a subnet is held as that subnet's alpha token. Alpha cannot be sent to the deposit address. Unstake back to TAO first, then check that the wallet shows it as a free balance.

The network fee for the transfer is paid in TAO, so leave a little behind rather than sending everything. The deposit usually confirms in a few minutes, and you can follow it on Taostaten by searching your coldkey address.

For the payout you want a 0x address on Ethereum, which is 42 characters in total. MetaMask, Rabby or a Ledger account can supply it. Talisman can hold an Ethereum account next to your Bittensor account, which keeps both sides in one app, but the two accounts have different addresses. Copy the one that starts with 0x.

The address starting with 5 is your sender address, not your payout address. A Bittensor address cannot receive LINK, so a quick look at the first characters of the payout field saves trouble.

This pair pays LINK on Ethereum mainnet. A BNB Smart Chain version of LINK appears in the coin list too; make sure the one you choose is the Ethereum entry. Most wallets show LINK on their own; if yours does not, look up your address on Etherscan and add the token from there.

The payout itself needs no ETH in the wallet. To move or stake the LINK later, add a little ETH for gas.

The key difference is in the fee row. TAO covers its own transfer cost, so you need nothing extra on the Bittensor side apart from a small remainder. LINK is a token, and Ethereum charges gas in ETH for every move. Keep that in mind if you plan to use the LINK soon after the swap. The send-from row is a reminder that only the coldkey holds a balance you can transfer.

Type the TAO amount and the exchange box shows the LINK you receive after fees, quoted from aggregated liquidity from leading crypto markets. That quote keeps tracking the market until Bittensor confirms your deposit, and this pair's minimum and maximum appear right next to it.

The TAO deposit takes a few minutes to confirm. Once it is in, most swaps finish within minutes, and the LINK payout takes roughly 2 to 5 more on Ethereum. Each stage is visible on the status page tied to your swap ID.

Should anything block the swap, the rule is simple: if a swap cannot be completed, the coins are refunded to the sender address you entered. Make that your own coldkey address, not an address on an exchange.
