SAND to PYUSD: Swap The Sandbox for PayPal USD on Ethereum

SAND is the token of The Sandbox, a virtual world where players build and trade game assets. PYUSD, PayPal USD, is a stablecoin meant to track the US dollar one to one. Moving from the first to the second is how a SAND holder steps out of a volatile game token while keeping the value on-chain and in a wallet they control.

Both sides of this pair are ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum. That is unusual among cross-asset swaps and it simplifies a lot. There is no second network to learn, no new address format and no bridge. The SAND leaves an Ethereum address and the PYUSD arrives at an Ethereum address, which can even be the same one.

What stays the same on both sides is the gas coin. Neither SAND nor PYUSD pays its own Ethereum fees; ETH does that. The rest of this page is mostly about getting that detail right, plus the few ways a same-chain token swap can still go wrong.

Sending SAND is a token transfer, and Ethereum charges gas for it in ETH. A wallet holding SAND and zero ETH cannot make the deposit at all; MetaMask or Rabby will refuse to sign or show an error about insufficient funds for gas. Put a small amount of ETH in the account before you start.

Gas comes up again once the PYUSD has landed. PYUSD will sit at your 0x address, but moving it again, to another wallet or into an app, costs gas in ETH too. If the sending wallet is also the receiving wallet, whatever ETH is left after the deposit covers that later transfer. A fresh address with no ETH would hold the PYUSD and nothing to spend it with.

What a SAND transfer costs in gas depends on Ethereum traffic at that moment. Expect the SAND deposit itself to take about 2 to 5 minutes to reach its Ethereum confirmation.

The payout is ERC-20 PYUSD sent on Ethereum to the 0x address you paste in the box. It does not go to a PayPal login, an email address or a phone number. Paste a self-custody address from MetaMask, Rabby or a Ledger, and check the opening and closing characters before you continue.

Many wallets do not list PYUSD by default. If the balance does not appear after the payout, add PayPal USD as a custom token on Ethereum mainnet from the wallet's token search, or open your address on Etherscan, which lists every ERC-20 balance it holds. Etherscan is also the place to copy a token contract from if the wallet asks for one.

One property belongs to PYUSD itself and is worth knowing before you hold it: its issuer can freeze PYUSD at an address. That is part of how the token works on any chain, whichever wallet or service sent it to you.

This pair takes SAND as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum mainnet. Some Sandbox players keep their SAND on Polygon instead, where game activity is cheaper, and the token shows the same name and ticker there. A Polygon balance sent to the deposit address arrives on the wrong network and the swap cannot see it.

Before sending, switch your wallet's network selector to Ethereum and confirm the SAND balance is shown there. If it only appears under Polygon, move it to Ethereum mainnet first, then come back.

The box turns the SAND amount you type into a PYUSD figure with every fee already counted, priced from aggregated liquidity from leading crypto markets. Because PYUSD aims to stay at one dollar, nearly all the movement in that figure comes from SAND's own price. The rate floats until the SAND deposit has confirmed on Ethereum, and the pair's lower and upper limits are listed beside the quote.

On timing, the Ethereum confirmation of your deposit takes about 2 to 5 minutes. Most swaps finish within minutes once that is done, and the PYUSD payout then needs one more Ethereum confirmation.

Enter an Ethereum address you control as the sender. That address matters because of one rule: if a swap cannot be completed, the coins are refunded to the sender address you entered. For SAND, that means a refund of the ERC-20 token back to your own MetaMask, Rabby or Ledger account.

Do not start this swap with a withdrawal from an exchange account. The SAND would leave a pooled hot wallet, and a refund sent there may never find its way back to your balance. Withdraw to your own wallet, then send from it.

The swap ID gives you a status page that follows the order from deposit to payout. On Etherscan, the token transfer tab of your address shows the outgoing SAND and, later, the incoming PYUSD.
