RAY to TAO: Swap Raydium on Solana for Native Bittensor

RAY is the SPL token of the Raydium protocol on Solana. TAO is the native coin of Bittensor, a network where participants run machine-learning work in subnets and are paid in TAO for it. One sits inside the Solana ecosystem, the other runs its own chain with its own accounts and keys.

People make this move when they want exposure to Bittensor directly, or plan to stake TAO, and their starting point is a Solana wallet. Doing it as one swap avoids a stop in a third coin and avoids wrapped TAO, which would be a token on another chain rather than the real thing.

The deposit is an SPL token transfer from Phantom, Solflare or a Ledger with the Solana app. The fee for that transfer is paid in SOL, so the sending account must hold some SOL alongside the RAY. With no SOL at all, the wallet will not submit the transaction.

Only RAY held on Solana counts as a deposit for this pair. In the wallet, open the token and check that the network shown is Solana before you send.

Paste the deposit address from the box and send the exact amount you entered. That address belongs to this one order; a future swap will issue a fresh one. RAY deposits settle on Solana in under a minute, so the Solana step is rarely the slow part. The signature for it appears in your wallet's activity list and on Solscan, and that signature is worth keeping until the TAO has arrived.

Bittensor addresses use the SS58 format and start with the digit 5. They look nothing like Solana addresses, so a mix-up is easy to spot if you look. Create the address in Talisman or Nova Wallet with the Bittensor network selected, copy it, and paste it into the payout field.

In Bittensor terms, this address is your coldkey: the key that holds TAO and signs transfers. Miners and validators also use hotkeys for their work on subnets, but those are operating keys, not where you want a payout to land. Give the swap your coldkey address.

Talisman and Nova Wallet also support Polkadot, and the same key can appear there under a different prefix. Make sure the address you copy is the Bittensor one, starting with 5. No memo or extra field is needed. Bittensor adds a block about every 12 seconds and confirms the payout in a few minutes; you can watch it arrive on Taostaten.

Two rows stand out. The fee row means you need SOL on the sending side but nothing extra on the receiving side, because TAO pays its own Bittensor fees. The wallet row means this swap always involves two apps. A Phantom user who has never set up Talisman or Nova Wallet should do that first, write down the new recovery phrase, and only then start the swap. Then the payout goes to an address you already control.

The TAO arrives as a free balance on your coldkey. It is not staked automatically. If your plan is to stake with a validator or on a subnet, that is a separate step you take in your wallet afterwards, and it uses a little TAO for fees.

A free balance can be moved, staked or swapped again at any time. Staked TAO cannot be sent until it is unstaked, which matters if you might want to move the coins back out later. Keep a small amount unstaked to pay Bittensor fees.

If you want to see where the payout went, search your 5-address on Taostats. It shows the incoming transfer and, later, any staking you do. Should you ever want RAY again, TAO zu RAY runs the opposite way, and TAO zu SOL lands on Solana's own coin instead.
